SOUTHFIELD, Mich., October 5, 2017 – Park West Gallery is inviting the public to experience the kinetic art of renowned Israeli artist Yaacov Agam in its newly-renovated gallery and museum.

The exhibition “Agam” will run from October 6 to November 5 at Park West Museum, a free-to-the-public museum located within Park West Gallery’s headquarters in Southfield, Michigan.

Park West has been a fixture in the Detroit arts community for decades, functioning as a museum, a gallery, and a center for arts education for the past 22 years. Now, thanks to their recent expansion, Park West has even more opportunities to share artwork from past and present masters with the local community.

“Park West Gallery has been in business over 48 years and, during that time, we’ve amassed a collection of unique art that we wish to share with Metro Detroit,” Park West Gallery Founder and CEO Albert Scaglione said. “I believe our collections will appeal to art lovers or any visitors who want to learn more about art.”

With the addition of 2 new galleries and a redesigned floor-plan, Park West Museum now showcases both contemporary works and previously archived masterworks by some of art history’s greatest figures, including Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Joan Miró.

The first exhibition in the revitalized museum space—“Agam”—holds special meaning for Park West. They have represented the internationally acclaimed artist for over 40 years.

“Agam is one of the most important living artists today,” Scaglione said. “We’re honored to have such a long-standing relationship—and friendship—with a creative genius of his caliber.”

Agam is a pioneer of the kinetic art movement, which stresses transformation, movement, and viewer interaction. Agam’s list of accomplishments includes becoming the highest-recorded selling Israeli artist in 2010 and receiving the 2017 “Warrior for Truth” Award from “The Algemeiner,” one of the world’s foremost Jewish newspapers.

The exhibition “Agam” features artwork from various career retrospectives, including “Special Exhibition in Advance of the Official Museum Opening” at the Yaacov Agam Museum of Art in Rishon LeZion, Israel, “The Magic of Yaacov Agam” at the Museum of Geometric and MADI Art in Dallas, and “Agam: Beyond the Visible” at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

In honor of the opening of “Agam” and of Agam’s proud Israeli heritage, the Park West Foundation will donate $10,000 to “The Algemeiner.”

Park West Gallery is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery and museum are located at 29469 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, Michigan 48034.

<![CDATA[Le Marche Du Nain Rouge is Coming!]]>Sun, 19 Feb 2017 21:38:45 GMThttp://2017plus.detroitmm.com/upcoming/le-march-du-nain-rouge-is-coming
Everyone knows that Detroit has had its ups and downs since its founding nearly 316 years ago on July 24, 1701 and, if we’d only paid a bit more attention to history, these Troubles (many thanks to Stephen King for a good abbreviation) would have made a lot more sense. Detroit’s troubles are apparently due to the Red Dwarf, the Imp, or Le Nain Rouge, as he is best known, and a curse put on our founder, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, by this devious rapscallion. Cadillac failed to heed the warnings of a fortune teller while passing down what is now the Detroit River and this became his and our fate. There is more to learn about this Dwarf, besides the fact that he now has beers named after him, and if you are interested in such detail, here is one link.
But our primary interest here is to pass on to you our acquaintance of the ceremony that is held every year in an attempt to drive this demon out of Detroit and stop this roller coaster of feast, then famine. We’ve only attended once, but it was quite memorable and we plan to be there again this year. We encourage you to go and assist in the effort but, if you do, you need to be mentally prepared if the Nain Rouge makes an appearance and tries to sway the crowds over to his point of view. He did this last year and he is a very smooth talker. Fortunately the hazy web of deceit he was weaving over the crowd was broken before it completely set in and the Nain was sent packing once again…at least for the time being.

We’ve added photos we took of Le Marche Du Nain Rouge to the 2017+ section of this website. If you dare to look upon his horrific visage, here is the link for that.

Should you have enough courage to actually show up and do mental battle with the Nain, you can find out more about it at the links provided. Good luck to you.

The Main Event

All are invited to join in the Marche, a parade made up of the citizens of Detroit. No registration required – just show up and join in the celebration.

What you need to know:

This year, we kick off at noon at the main stage with a program of poetry, music, and carney revelry. Check it out!

The Marche du Nain Rouge proper begins at 1 p.m. at the intersection of Canfield St. and Second Ave., as revelers celebrate the spring equinox and lay a solid groundwork for hope for the upcoming year, just in case the Nain should try something dastardly.

This year, the Marche is back on Cass Avenue!

Revelers are encouraged to come masked or fully costumed; groups are encouraged to join in the fun with DIY chariots. CASH PRIZES will be presented to Detroit neighborhood groups with the best floats! Information coming soon.

There is no cost, just come out and have a good time.

Russian National Ballet Theatre Performs Swan Lake
The Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow during the transitional period of Perestroika in the late 1980s, when many of the great dancers and choreographers of the Soviet Union's ballet institutions were exercising their new-found creative freedom by starting new, vibrant companies dedicated not only to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet but to invigorate this tradition as the Russians began to accept new developments in the dance from around the world. The company, then titled the Soviet National Ballet, was founded by and incorporated graduates from the great Russian choreographic schools of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Perm. The principal dancers of the company came from the upper ranks of the great ballet companies and academies of Russia, and the companies of Riga, Kiev and even Warsaw. Today, the Russian National Ballet Theatre is its own institution, with over 50 dancers of singular instruction and vast experience, many of whom have been with the company since its inception. In addition to their extensive tour history, beginning in January 2017 the company will embark upon a 4-month coast-to-coast tour of the United States. In 1994, the legendary Bolshoi principal dancer Elena Radchenko was selected by Presidential decree to assume the first permanent artistic directorship of the company. Ms. Radchenko is the founder of the Russian National Ballet Theatre, and she has focused the Company on upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works and developing new talents throughout Russia, with a repertory of virtually all of the great full works of Petipa: "Don Quixote," "La Bayadere," "The Sleeping Beauty," "Swan Lake," "Raymonda," "Paquita," "Coppelia" and "La Sylphide," as well as productions of, among others, "The Nutcracker," "Sylvia," and "La Fille Mal Gardee."
